This position is located in the Southeast Alaska Network of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. The Southeast Alaska Network supports Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Sitka National Historical Park, and coastal portions of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. These park units harbor an incredible diversity of ecosystems including environmental features of global significance, offering unparalleled opportunities for the study and stewardship of unique protected areas. The Interdisciplinary (Ecologist/Physical Scientist), serving as the SEAN Environmental Scientist, will collaborate with network staff to implement component long-term monitoring efforts including, but not limited to, freshwater water quality, streamflow, climate, oceanographic conditions, glaciers, environmental contaminants, and wildlife for the network parks. The Environmental Scientist will have diverse responsibilities in support of these programs including leading the implementation of one or more monitoring programs that align with their area(s) of expertise. Duties will include logistical arrangement for field expeditions and sampling, leading field crews in remote wilderness settings, processing and analysis of monitoring data from automated weather stations and water quality or oceanographic sampling instruments, authoring routine monitoring reports and other publications or outreach products, and delivering presentations to share program plans and findings with diverse audiences. Much of the work of the SEAN occurs in rugged and inaccessible locations, requiring a steadfast commitment to safety and situational awareness. The Environmental Scientist will serve as the network's collateral-duty safety officer, supporting the development of safety plans and practices for each of the network's component monitoring programs. INTERDISCIPLINARY (ECOLOGIST) GS-0408-9:
To qualify for this position as an Interdisciplinary (Ecologist) at the GS-0408-09 grade level, you must possess the following basic qualification requirements by close of the announcement:
bachelor's degree in biology or relate field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. (Transcripts are required). -OR- INTERDISCIPLINARY (PHYSICAL SCIENTIST) GS-0408-9:
To qualify for this position as an Interdisciplinary (Physical Scientist) at the GS-0408-09 grade level, you must possess the following basic qualification requirements by close of the announcement:
completed a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. -OR- a combination of education and experience. Education is equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting one of the the basic requirements above, you must also possess specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY (ECOLOGIST / PHYSICAL SCIENTIST) GS-0408/1301-9:
You must also meet the following specialized experience and/or education requirements to qualify for this position as an Interdisciplinary (Ecologist/Physcial Scientist) GS-0408/1301-09 grade level:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as:
use of scientific monitoring protocols in performing or assisting in short and/or long-term monitoring of ecosystem components, knowledge of laws, regulations and agency, organization or institutions policies and guidelines regarding the management and monitoring of ecosystems and natural resources, including endangers and exotic species; program management and administration of budgets, contracts and personnel; assist in missions to remote back-country areas to perform environmental monitoring; develop and implement plans to ensure safety of self and others; assist in arranging complex logistical arrangements for helicopter, fixed-wing or boat access. -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in related field of study to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take percentage of completed education. Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together.
